A computerised laser flash apparatus employs a dynamic method of measuring thermal diffusivity on disc shaped specimens. A Nd-Yg pulse laser momentarily heats one surface of the specimen and the temperature history of the rear surface is recorded and analysed by computer.

A choice of InSb or HgCdTe infrared detectors enable measurements to be performed over a wide temperature range, from room temperature to about 1000K. From specific heat data it is possible to calculate the thermal conductivity.
